The City of Newburyport currently has no senior center, conducting activities for seniors through the Council on Aging offices and the local Armory. In addition, a two year waiting list for apartments attests to the need for housing specifically designed for elders in the community.
Courtstreet Architects is researching the feasibility and possible schemes to combine a 12,000-14,000 sf senior center with 15-20 units of senior housing on the site of the former Fulton Gravel Pit. The drastically sloped topography creates opportunities for innovation as well as challenges to construction. The design for the senior center includes a large function room attached to a commercial kitchen, a reference library, billiards room, TV lounge, generous reception area, and a wellness clinic and exercise room. Combining the senior center with senior housing creates an efficient and compatible mixed use project.
